Sponsorship of Bonzo Ten/10 Cricket Competition Continues (April 2008)

The Nevis Co-operative Credit Union was once again the proud sponsor of the Nevis Cricket Association (NCA)/Nevis Co-operative Credit Union (NCCU) Bonzo Ten/10 Knockout Competition, which bowled off in early March 2008. The Competition was an exciting contest which saw the participation of eleven teams from across the island, vying for the title of champions. The competition ran for four weeks, with the finals held in early April.

Participating teams were: All Stars (2007 Champions); Empire (2007 Runner Up); Highlights International; Four Seasons; Calypos Cricket Club; Jessups; Easterns; Brown Hill; SDA Jets; Tuberose; and Big Rock United.

As the people's organisation and a responsible corporate citizen, the NCCU views this sponsorship as a contribution to the development of the young men in our society; and expressed the wish that the "most disciplined team" emerge as the winner.

Meanwhile, the Nevis Cricket Association has expressed its profound thanks to the NCCU for another generous sponsorship of EC$5,000 for the now established Annual Ten/10 Tournament, which is a prelude to the Cricketing Calendar in Nevis.  The competiton was held at the Ramsbury/Craddock Road Playfield, under lights.

The format saw a slight shift from the past.  The tournament had a knockout phase, followed by a round-robin phase.  The top four teams from the 2007 competition were given a "bye" for the knockout, whereas the remaining teams played in the knockout phase to determine who would advance to the round-robin contest.

The tournament featured two (2) games per night from March 6th 2008 and climaxed on April 8th 2008, with an exciting finale, featuring "Empire" and "Brown Hill".  Empire, the losing finalist in the two previous competitons, emerged as the 2008 Champions.

Medals of recognition were awarded to the Umpires who did a marvelous job in ensuring the games were played and adjudicated in fairness and in gamely spirits.

The turnout to the games was very good, and was comparable to other events held on Nevis. Many spectators supported this form of entertainment, as it allowed them to catch a piece of the sport they love after a long day at work, and also it gave them an opportunity to socialize and discuss the game of cricket from many different angles.
